Mexican pilot arrested at Barajas with a suitcase filled with cocaine

He assumed airport security for his flight would have been more lax last Thursday as the Pope's flight was landing at the same time

The Civil Guard released news on Thursday that a man was arrested for drug smuggling at Madrid Barajas last week, carrying 42 kilos of cocaine in his luggage.

The drugs were found in a suitcase which arrived on a flight from Mexico on August 18. The suspect, a 40 year old man named as R.G.G., was co-pilot on the flight.

According to the Civil Guard, he had attempted to smuggle such a large amount of cocaine into Spain because he had assumed that officers assigned at the airport would have been diverted to reinforce security for the Pope’s flight, which landed with the Pontiff in Madrid for World Youth Day at the same time as his.
