42 year old miner from León, José Manuel Álvarez Fernández, killed three people when, armed with a machete, he went on the rampage in Degaña, Asturias, in the early hours of Monday. The three victims are the father, brother and current boyfriend of his ex partner.
He killed them as they sleeping in their beds, after using a mallet to batter down the front door of his ex girlfriend’s home.
His ex, who El País reports was elected as a Socialist councillor for Degaña in Sunday’s local elections, was injured in the attack, as was her mother, although neither of their lives are in danger. It’s understood that the suspect’s two children, aged 6 and 11, who lived with their mother, were not hurt in the attack and were unaware of what was happening in their home.
Their father was arrested in Villablino, León, some hours later.
